It’s not only ABBA, IKEA, and meatballs Sweden is famous for as many online gambling operators like Unibet, Mr Green, LeoVegas, and Maria Casino have their roots in Sweden. Another very well-known Swedish company that might ring some bells (wink), is Net Entertainment that changed the official company name in 2015 to NetEnt.
Having a look at the products that have their origin in this Scandinavian country, including the NetEnt Games, there’s no doubt quality is a standard in Sweden. It also seems that the country is pretty up-to-date, except for one thing, their online gambling laws.
Like many European countries, the laws relating to online gambling in Sweden aren’t as clear as they could be. Some online gambling products are regulated, though, like sports betting, horse race betting, online poker, bingo, and lottery, all based on two legislation: the 1994 and the 1999, Lotteries Act and Casinos Act respectively.
However, the licenses involved have been obtained by public benefit organisations, the horse racing industry, and the state lottery only and, therefore, private operators can’t apply for an iGaming license in the country. In fact, only the state-backed Svenska Spel has been granted a license by the government.
The recent gambling laws in Sweden have led to a lot of criticism and a number of failed attempts to overturn the Swedish monopoly through the courts. Earlier cases elsewhere in Europe eventually resulted in updated iGaming regulations, but so far the Swedish government didn’t introduce new gambling laws as this has been the case in other European countries such as Denmark, UK, Italy, France, Belgium, and Spain while the Netherlands is in the process of regulating online gambling in the country.
Also, the Swedish Government has often refused to bow to demands from the European Commission that it should throw open its betting market to non-Swedish companies. In November 2013, the Commission asked Sweden, again, to take action to ensure compliance of its national rules with EU law in the areas of online betting services and online poker services, In October 2014, the European Commission, noting that it did not consider the Swedish reactions to its requests as satisfactory, referred Sweden to Court of Justice of the EU for her lack of compliance with EU law. In February 2015, the Swedish government still stated that the deregulation of the Swedish gambling market was not something that was on the government’s agenda.
Swedish gambling monopoly
In 1934, the Swedish government moved to counter illegal gambling through the establishment of AB Tipstjänst, a public company with exclusive rights to run The Pools. In 1943 the state bought up all of the shares in Tipstjänst, nationalizing the company. Later on, in 1997, Tipstjänst merged with Penninglotteriet (a smaller state lottery), now known as Svenska Spel.
Ever since the Swedish gambling market has been run by Svenska Spel and changes to The Lotteries Act in 2002 enabled SvenskaSpel to operate digital platforms as well and from that moment on Swedish gaming enthusiasts were able to play the instant scratch card games online. In 2005, Svenska Spel introduced online poker in the hope that the Swedish would only play online poker with organizations that were under the control of the Swedish state.
The Future iGaming industry in Sweden
Swedish and international operators, legally operating under a casino license granted by gambling authorities in iGaming jurisdictions such as Malta, UK, Gibraltar or Alderney, keep on attracting many Swedish players. You can’t even blame the players to choose for an offshore online casino as these Swedish operators (Mr Green, 888, Unibet) and International operators (Race Casino, YakoCasino, Fun Casino) are offering greater payouts and larger casino jackpots than Svenska Spel. Think about jackpots such as the Mega Fortune™ Jackpot, Hall of Gods™ Jackpot, and the Arabian Nights™ Jackpot, often paying a lucky winner multiple millions.
Some political parties in Sweden seem to be coming around, realising that the current monopoly may not be as effective as they once thought and it seems that Sweden has come around after all. The Scandinavian country is now, finally, in the process of regulating its iGaming market, in response to the threats of legal action by European Commission watchdogs.
A draft legislation is expected early 2017, followed by a period of stakeholder comment and a final draft for consideration by the end of 2017, but experience tells me this might take a while longer.
As it’s the case in the Netherlands with monopolist Holland Casino, the legislators in Sweden are expected to call for the privatization of Svenska Spel while casino licenses while a certain number of casino licenses will be issued to international operators. After regulations, those operators without a casino license can expect a more aggressive approach from the government to prevent such operators to access the Swedish market.
Swedish online casino with Swedish Krona
As mentioned before, many NetEnt Casinos are operating on the Swedish iGaming market giving Swedish players lots of choice. Among all those online casino brands, Swedish or not, there’s only one online casino with a focus on Swedish players, and Swedish players only. I’m talking about KarlCasino, an online casino platform that has been created for Swedish players with only one currency available, the Swedish Krona!
If you’re looking for an online casino that really appreciates its Swedish players, treating them like they were part of ABBA, you are at the right place at KarlCasino. You become royal the moment you register at this Swedish NetEnt Casino with a very easy-to-use responsive casino platform. No matter if you enter KarlCasino from your PC, laptop or a mobile device, this platform never fails to look good with the online casino games in the spotlights as well.
With the Swedish Krona as the only currency available, you never have to calculate the bonuses into your own beloved Swedish Krona at KarlCasino. All casino bonuses are published in KR and I can imagine it to be a lot more convenient for Swedish players.
The welcome bonus, for example, involves a 100% bonus up to 5.000 KR while 10 free spins for Starburst™ are awarded straight after your registration and another 100 free spins for Starburst™ will become available straight after your first deposit. Be ready to be spoiled at KarlCasino as your second deposit will activate a second welcome bonus of 50% with a maximum of 2.500 KR, another reason to join the one and only online casino with the Swedish Krona as the only currency available.
