For NetEnt fans, Gonzo doesn’t need an introduction! But for those that don’t know Gonzo yet, you must keep reading, as NetEnt’s most popular slot character is now to be seen in two NetEnt slots. The first was launched in 2011 while 2021 brought Gonzo’s Gold™ to the NetEnt Casinos.
Who is Gonzo?
Over a decade ago, NetEnt took the iGaming industry by surprise with the launch of the Gonzo’s Quest™ slot. I remember not being much impressed by the video slots available, just until NetEnt launched Gonzo’s Quest™ in 2011.
It all started in 1541, off the coast of Peru. No one considered travelling that time, except for the few brave conquistadors. Among them is also the Spanish explorer Gonzo. While most are in search of gold, Gonzo has plans of his own.
While the moon shines bright on the water of Peru’s coast, you see Gonzo grabbing his map to start his quest! NetEnt’s very own conquistador sets off to find the lost city of gold: Eldorado!
NetEnt Casinos used to show the story of Gonzo. But as time passed, some skipped the intro as Gonzo gained enough popularity among the players. For old times sake, I added the intro above for you to meet Gonzo after all.
Gonzo is clearly based on the historical character of Gonzalo Pizzaro and you will eventually meet him in the middle of the jungle! Did he find the Lost City of Gold?
Where did Gonzo go?
While Gonzo was busy entertaining players worldwide with the Moonwalk, of course, next to the reels in Gonzo’s Quest™, he might have spent some time planning a new adventure as well.
10 years after his first adventure, it looks like he ended up in an Incan temple. Is it the Temple of the Moon in Peru? He was in Peru and the temple lays in Machu Picchu.
Considering there are absolutely no comparisons, it must be some hidden temple somewhere in Peru. If I believe the symbols on the reels in the Gonzo’s Gold™ slot, we’re on the way to Chichen Itza in Mexico. A gem, especially with the sun rising from behind the temple. However, Chichen Itza is a Mayan temple, while NetEnt promises us an Incan temple.
It doesn’t matter! What’s most important, is that Gonzo is back in the Gonzo’s Gold™ slot! We can once again enjoy his presence. This time not next to the reels though, dancing the Moonwalk, being all grumpy! This time, you will see him as a symbol on the reels.
Gonzo’s Gold™ vs Gonzo’s Quest™
While they have Gonzo Pizarro in common, the two Gonzo slots haven’t much more in common. You would expect different from a sequel to the Gonzo’s Quest™ slot, but NetEnt decided to keep Gonzo’s Gold™ as simple as can be.
Gonzo’s Quest™ is rather standard with a 5×3 layout. This changed in Gonzo’s Gold™ as NetEnt added another two rows to come to a 5×5 grid. The reason is understandable with the Cluster Pays™ mechanism in place. A symbol is part of a cluster if it is horizontally or vertically adjacent to the same symbol. 3 or more high win symbols or 4 or more low win symbols appearing in a cluster award a win.
The Cluster Pays™ is what makes the Gonzo’s Gold™ slot. Unfortunately, we don’t see the Avalanche feature back in the sequel. We do see the recognisable question mark back in Gonzo’s Gold™, though. Together with Gonzo as a symbol, the game will feel familiar anyway.
Walking the Incan route in this NetEnt slot, symbols have changed a lot. Instead of the majestic stone carvings, we now have more modern symbols to enjoy. And Gonzo’s Quest™ remained free of boring letters symbols, with a 5×5 grid it seems logic NetEnt added some in the Gonzo’s Gold™.
The RTP in Gonzo’s Quest™ isn’t the highest with 95.97%, and we do see a bit of an increase there with an RTP of 96.11% in Gonzo’s Gold™.
The whole idea of a sequel was to bring players a high volatility video slot. It all started with the medium to high volatility in Gonzo’s Quest™, but you now have a chance to enjoy a high volatile Gonzo game as well.
Leaves me to mention that Free Falls became Free Spins while completely new in the Gonzo’s Gold™ slot is the Golden Symbol Expansion.
The maximum potential win can go up to 6500 times your bet. Imagine that! Even with the minimum bet of 0.10, you’ll end up on a pink cloud. However, you can always choose to play with a bet higher, with a maximum of 200.00 available. The Gonzo’s Gold™ slot offers around 40 different coin values to play with.
Gonzo’s Gold™ slot features
It’s clear that our beloved Spanish conquistador will stop at nothing to get his hands on temple gold. Enjoy Gonzo on his new quest for gold and enjoy a whole new slot adventure!
This time, we find Gonzo exploring an Incan temple, and it seems all of Gonzo’s gold dreams are finally coming true! It’s all gold this NetEnt slot is about. Who knows, maybe you swim in golden coins when you play this Cluster Pays video slot.
New in Gonzo’s Gold™, is the Golden Symbol Expansion feature. But besides that, we see features that are rather familiar, including Scatters that act as a Wild while three or more activate Free Spins.
Free Spins feature
In Gonzo’s Gold™, it all starts with Free Spins. Of course, you have the Cluster Pays feature for some good slot excitement in the main game. But when you activate Free Spins, it’s time for real slot action!
The game is made to be simple and straightforward. Therefore, three or more Scatters activate the Free Spins feature with 10 Free Spins available. More Scatters involved in the activation of the Free spins feature in Gonzo’s Gold™, result in a higher Multiplier.
3 Scatters = x2
4 Scatters = x20
5 Scatters = x200
yes, you read it very well. When 5 Scatters activate the Free Spins feature, all your wins are multiplied by x200! Gonzo’s Gold™ might be about simplicity, but that doesn’t mean your wins are!
Golden Symbol Expansion
You activate the Free Spins feature, ready for your Free Spins to start. But first, you have to go through the Pick and Click feature. The feature is there to reveal the Golden Symbol Expansion symbol.
This particular symbol expands as soon as two or more horizontally or vertically adjacent Expanding Symbols appear on the reels. They then expand to take over the entire row or reel.
All symbols, except Scatter Symbols, can be considered a Golden Expanding Symbol during Free Spins and remain golden for the entire Free Spins feature.
