About Jimi Hendrix

I’m slowly turning into a rock expert as I already turned into a Guns N’ Roses fan after listening to their biggest hits over and over again while writing the Guns N’ Roses online slot™ review, the first of the ‘NetEnt Rocks’ trilogy. Now again I have the honour to write about one of the best artists in the history of music who was born as Johnny Allen Hendrix in 1942 in Seattle, USA.

Jimi Hendrix only started playing guitar at the age of 15, even though it was before, in the mid-1950’s, that Jimi’s habit of carrying a broom with him to emulate a guitar gained the attention of the school’s social worker. After Jimi “played” a “wooden broom guitar” for over a year, she requested the school to buy Jimi a guitar. Her efforts failed, but fate brought the first instrument into Hendrix’s life in 1957 as it was in this year that Hendrix found a ukulele when helping his father with a side-job. The older woman it belonged to told him to keep the instrument, probably the most important day of Jimi’s short life. Remarkable was the fact that the ukelele only had one string which seemed enough for Hendrix to learn single notes. At the beginning of 1958, Hendrix lost his mother due to liver cirrhosis. A tough period was what followed as Jimi was only 15 years old but a few months later he bought himself his first acoustic guitar for $5. Hendrix was practicing the instrument for several hours daily while watching others. Listening well to tips from more experienced guitarists, and listening to blues artists eventually paid off in acquiring a rare talent.

Never being much of a support for Jimi’s musicality, it was in 1959 his father relented and bought Jimi a white Supro Ozark, an electric guitar that gave him the ability to be heard over the sound of his first band, the Velvetones.

After law enforcement authorities caught Jimi twice driving a stolen car, he was given a choice between spending time in prison or joining the Army, which he enlisted on May 31, 1961, three years after he completed junior high school. When Hendrix experienced hard times in the army, he asked his father to send him his red Silvertone Danelectro. Even though his obsession with the instrument resulted in resistance of his peers, Jimi never gave up on the instrument.

End of 1961, Jimi met fellow serviceman Billy Cox in an army club who was obviously intrigued by the proficient playing of Hendrix. The two started jamming and performing at base clubs on the weekends. After Cox was discharged from the Army in September 1963, he and Hendrix moved to Tennessee where to formed a band called the King Kasuals. For the next two years, Hendrix made a living performing at a circuit of venues throughout the South, drawing popularity as a renowned guitarist. Before Jimi Hendrix formed his first band The Jimmy Hendrix Experience where he played the guitar and also sang as the lead vocalist, he backed artists like Little Richard, B.B. King, and Ike and Tina Turner.

It was in September 1966 Jimi moved to London where he formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience along with Noel Redding as the bass player and John “Mitch” Mitchell on the drums. The group then performed their first hit single “Hey Joe” in a stage show at London. The first album from The Jimi Hendrix Experience was named Are You Experienced?, followed by Axis: Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland. The group broke up in 1967, due to a contractual dispute between Jimi and his producer Ed Chalpin in 1965. This break-up resulted in Jimi’s live album: Band of Gypsys but unfortunately no new albums were produced as Jimi died at the age of 27 due to an overdose of sleeping pills.
